Eleanor M. (Eldridge) Mahoney, age 92, passed away peacefully in the Norwood Hospital on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 2, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Gertrude (Niles) Eldridge. She was raised in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston and graduated from Jamaica Plain High School with the Class of 1942. Shortly after graduation, Eleanor joined the war effort, supporting her country during World War II, serving as a welder in the South Boston Navy Yard.
Eleanor met her husband, Walter J. Mahoney, after the close of World War II and they were married on September 20, 1947. They young couple initially made their home in Jamaica Plain, however eventually settled in East Walpole, Massachusetts in 1959. Eleanor was a wonderful wife and mother, she and Walter loved spending time together, taking their young family on many vacations throughout New England and New York. After spending several years as a homemaker, raising and caring for her family, Eleanor returned to the working world, taking a part time position with D&W Jewelry in Norwood during the 1960s and continued working there in the 1970s. Sadly, Walter suddenly passed away in 1973. Eleanor was blessed to meet the second love of her life, Archie Murray, in 1976. Eleanor and Archie spent 40 years together, truly enjoying everything life had to offer, blending two families together, the Mahoneys and the Murrays.
Eleanor continued working various part time jobs until she took a stock clerk position with Analog Devices in Norwood in 1980. She spent 7 years at Analog Devices, retiring in 1987. In her retirement, Eleanor enjoyed traveling and taking trips to various casinos around the country, trying her luck at the slot machines. She and Archie visited Canada, California, Atlantic City, and Las Vegas together and every year, they departed their home in Norwood to drive south, spending the winter months in Florida. Eleanor kept a very busy social calendar with her friends and enjoyed seeking out yard sales, flea markets, and jewelry shops, always looking for the best bargain.
