Edith Pane Noyes, age 101, passed away on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024, at her home in Walpole, Massachusetts surrounded by her loving family. Born in Watertown, Massachusetts on April 10, 1923, she was the daughter of Antonio and Rachela Pane. Edith grew up in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School in the early 1940's. At the onset of America's involvement in World War II, Edith began working at Hood Rubber, manufacturing boots for the infantrymen serving our country overseas.
Toward the end of the war, Edith joined a dear friend on a double date when she met Frank A. Noyes, a member of the United States Navy who was home recuperating from an injury sustained in battle. The pair hit it off immediately and were soon going on dates regularly, both looking forward to spending time together whether it was for a date at a USO event or for breakfast at the local pancake house. On November 17, 1946, Edith married the love of her life, Frank, in the Sacred Heart Church in her hometown of Watertown.
The young couple made their married home in the Palfrey Hill neighborhood of Watertown, before living in Belmont, Massachusetts and Millis, Massachusetts, before settling into their forever home in Walpole in 1968, where they would raise a family. Edith raised five beautiful children in her new home, which kept her quite busy. She was a very active parent and encouraged her children to pursue all their interests, which led to Edith attending many sporting events. Edith became a staple in the stands at Walpole High, cheering on her children at their various games and meets. During this time, she held a variety of jobs in the bookkeeping and secretarial fields, balancing family and work life.
One way to describe Edith was as a matriarch as she was the glue that held her family together. She had all the hallmarks and heritage of a matriarch; she was supportive, strong, empathetic, and enthusiastic. When her husband Frank decided to pursue his education and attend nursing school, she ensured that her household was run smoothly, taking some of the burden from his shoulders and allowing him to focus. When her siblings and parents grew older, Edith stepped up to help care for them, sometimes making the trek to Watertown on a daily basis for weeks on end. Edith welcomed everyone to her home with open arms and like any good Italian mother, ensured they were well fed, whipping up a multicourse meal in short order and insisting you ate your fill whether you wanted to or not. Her family was her pride and joy, which only grew greater when she became a grandmother, and later a great grandmother.
In her free time, Edith enjoyed a variety of activities. She was an avid card player and game enthusiast, with most people who visited her house being able to attest to playing a round of her favorite game Rummikub. Edith also enjoyed knitting. She knit many lapghans which she donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, providing a source of comfort for those in need. Many family members and friends were recipients of her special knitted headbands. She even knit them for her grandchildren’s classmates and sports teams as well as many thankful seniors at the Walpole Council on Aging. She could also be found cheering for her favorite band, Shady Armadillo.
In her retirement, Edith loved to travel. She toured her ancestral home of Italy and took a two-week trip across the United States visiting destinations such as the Grand Canyon, the Tetons, and many other national parks. One of her favorite trips though was when she brought her whole family to Disney World in 2001, sharing the excitement and joy at the happiest place on earth with multiple generations. Edith also became very involved with the Walpole Council on Aging in her retirement, attending bingo regularly with Frank who often called the numbers. After Franks passing, it became a home away from home. She looked forward to receiving the program booklet each month, pouring over the activities and offerings with her friend Louise Stapleton, planning out their adventures for the next month and calling immediately to secure spots. Not only was she an active member of the Walpole Council on Aging, but she also served on its board, helping to craft a welcoming environment that met the needs of the local senior population. Edith also was one of the founding members of the Senior Moments Choir, giving the singing group its name, and sharing music with the community. She was honored for this achievement in December of 2023, the same year she turned 100.
Throughout her life, Edith was a devout Catholic. She was a proud member of the Legion of Mary, where, as a lay volunteer, she would visit the sick, lead prayer chains for those in need of support, gather to pray the rosary, and serve her community. She shared her faith with many generations through Blessed Sacrament's religious education program.
Edith will be remembered as a passionate and well-respected woman. She was generous, strong willed, and steadfast. She loved with all her heart and was well loved in return.
