Douglas Brian Arthmann, age 78, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Concord Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 6, 1946, he was the son of the late Clarence and Mary (Dresslaers) Arthmann.
Doug was raised in West Roxbury and graduated from Boston Trade High School. At that time, motorcycles were his passion, particularly Harleys. Doug went into the Navy in 1966 and was in the reserves for two years. He was a marine mechanic and was responsible for running the engines on ships such as the USS Barry and the USS Dealey. After leaving the service, Doug went to work running heavy machinery for a few years before starting long haul trucking in 1975.
Doug married the love of his life, Kathleen A. Murphy on May 26, 1977, in Norwood, Massachusetts. The couple made their married home in Walpole in 1978 where they raised their children and lived happily for 35 years. His strong beliefs mixed with a heavy dose of compassion made him the best Dad, and whether in person or over the phone, he was always there.
Doug was always up for a good time, and the fun did not start until he arrived. His sense of humor was iconic, and everyone in his life was given nicknames. After an incident with an electrical problem, his beloved Kathy became known as “Sparky”. Even everyday things got silly names, like “suds” for beer. Doug was a wonderful dancer and enjoyed dancing The Bump to the Oldies with his wife. In his spare time, he enjoyed riding his ATV in Maine and detailing his motorcycle for hours, keeping everything shipshape. To relax, he loved watching his favorite hockey team, The Bruins.
Doug retired from Martin Transport in 2009 and several years later, he and Kathy moved to New Hampshire. They lived there for 8 years, before moving down to Sarasota, Florida for a time. Doug was able to spend his time with his beloved miniature schnauzer, Stormy. The pair was inseparable, and even started to look alike with their matching beards.
