Dorothy M. Sutherland, age 94, passed away peacefully in the Mount Saint Rita Health Center in Cumberland, Rhode Island on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on April 4, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Mary J.M. (Sheehan) Richardson. She was raised in Norwood, Massachusetts and graduated from Norwood High School with the Class of 1941. Dorothy continued her education after graduation, enrolling in nursing school, where she earned her R.N. in 1946. She was in the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II.
Dorothy married her husband, Ernest W. Sutherland on November 9, 1946 in Saint Catherine of Siena Church in Norwood. The young couple spent a short time in Walpole before settling in their Foxborough, Massachusetts home in 1954, where they raised their family. As a registered nurse, Dorothy worked in the Norwood Hospital as a private duty nurse for many years and later took a position with the Sharon Manor. Dorothy married John F. Caton on May 1, 1983 and the couple blended their two families together, continuing to live in Foxborough. Dorothy retired from the Charlwell House in Norwood in 1998, after more than 50 years of dedicated service in the nursing field.
In her retirement, Dorothy and John loved traveling across North America in their RV. They stopped in every state, but always made sure to return home to Foxborough, as Dorothy was most happy when she was surrounded by those she loved. Dorothy enjoyed her quiet time, reading, playing with her many cats, working with needlepoint, and making mittens for all her grandchildren.
