Donald Harwood Newhall

January 10, 1909 — February 24, 2007

Donald Harwood Newhall, 98, died on February 24, 2007 at Harrington House in Walpole. He was the husband of the late Priscilla Hawes Chase.

Born January 10, 1909, he was the son of the late Prescott Newhall and Mabel (Stackpole) Newhall.

Born and raised in Lynn, Massachusetts and a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, Donald attended MIT for 3 years before transferring to the University of Michigan for his senior year and his graduate work. Donald received his BS(ME) in 1934 and his Master's degree in 1935. He was also commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US

Army Reserves.

Upon graduation, after a short stint at the Chandler Farquar Company, Donald took a position at the Universal Winding Company (Now Leasona Corporation) and got married.

In 1939 the army needed help with taking a gun-manufacturing process (called autofrettage) from a laboratory a'"scale process to a production-scale process. The position required Donald's unique training from Michigan. They offered him a six months tour; at its conclusion they offered him a six-month extension, and again, the army made another offer which he accepted. Before the conclusion of the second extension, the army ordered him to stay in this position for the duration of the coming war.

Six years later, and 60,000 canons later, Donald was honorably discharged.

Donald took a position in the Research Department in 1946 at the Foxboro Company, but decided in 1948 to start his own firm, Harwood Engineering, specializing in equipment for very high pressure applications, exploiting his work during WWII.

Donald's inventions include the primary pressure standard used today worldwide for calibrating pressure gauges above the manometer pressure level.

Donald was active in the Massachusetts Orchid Society for many years. He enjoyed bridge and spending time with his family.
