Charles P. McCarthy

Charles P. McCarthy age 82 years died in the Norwood Hospital in Norwood, Massachusetts on Friday, February 11, 2011. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Florance P. and Catherine F. (Duffy) McCarthy. He graduated from Dorchester High School with the class of 1946. He went on to graduate from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. McCarthy proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Navy; he was stationed on the USS Jack W. Wilke. He has been a resident of Walpole, Massachusetts since 1957, moving there from Hyde Park.

Mr. McCarthy worked as the Senior Technical Writer for the Varian Associates in Lexington, and he retired in 1996 with over 40 years of experience. Prior to working at Varian Associates, he worked at the Bird Johnson Company in Walpole, the Northrup Corporation in Norwood and Jackson & Moreland Engineers in Boston.

He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus in Walpole, Council 1319. In addition, he was a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society 45, and was active until 2005 with the Walpole, Wellesley, Natick group, and was currently with the Main Street USA in Medway group.

Mr. McCarthy volunteered at Old Post Road School for 15 years as a mentor to students, and was a member of the planning board for the constuction of the school.

He enjoyed music, reading, playing golf, and telling jokes. He was a always a gentleman, and most of all loved to spend time with his family and friends.

Beloved husband of the late Joan A. (Shanks) McCarthy. Loving father of Kathleen Tripp-McGrath and her husband Harry McGrath of East Walpole, Marie McCarthy of Walpole, and Michael P. McCarthy and his wife Monica of North Attleboro. Affectionately known as Grampy to Jessica Tripp of Dorchester, Jonathan Tripp of New York City, Bailey and Max McCarthy of Watertown, CT, and to many others that were touched by his love. Brother of the late Vincent Edward McCarthy, USAF. Uncle of Steve McCarthy of SC. Brother in law of George Shanks and his wife Maureen of Canton.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the memorial service in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home 48 Common Street Walpole on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 10:00 AM. Visiting hours are Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 4-8PM. Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Old Post Road School 99 Old Post Road East Walpole, Massachusetts 02032.
