Catherine Theresa (Costello) Day, age 92, passed away on Monday, June 24th, 2024, at her home in Lebanon, Maine, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 2, 1932, she was the daughter of Daniel and Janet (Foley) Costello. Catherine, loving called “Kay” by her family and friends, was raised in Walpole, Massachusetts where she attended Walpole public schools.
As a young woman, Kay began her career working for the Toby Deutschmann Corporation in Norwood, Massachusetts and quickly rose within the company to become a supervisor. It was there that she met Francis Miller, who worked as a machinist. The pair became fast friends, looking forward to seeing each other when Kay would borrow his tools throughout the day. It wasn't long before friendship blossomed into romance, with the young couple marrying on May 18, 1952 at Saint Mary's Church in East Walpole, Massachusetts.
Kay and Francis made their married home in the South End of Boston for 12 years before purchasing a home in Foxborough, Massachusetts. There Kay took on the role of home maker and mother, raising four wonderful children.
After the untimely passing of her beloved Francis in 1965, Kay returned to the workforce to support her young family. She began working at Shaw's Supermarket in Sharon, Massachusetts, working in the butcher's department preparing and wrapping meats for hungry shoppers. During her career with Shaw’s, Kay was made Associate of the Year more than once, an accomplishment she was rightfully proud of. Kay was a loyal employee and she remained with the company until her retirement 42 years later.
In the early 1970's, Kay found love again with a longtime family friend, George Day, marrying on August 29, 1975 in a beautiful ceremony in Sharon. With her marriage to George, Kay became a mother of seven as she welcomed George's three children into her family. A short year later, Kay was diagnosed with colon cancer. Despite the odds being stacked against her, Kay courageously fought and won her battle, for which the whole family thankful.
Family was the most important part of Kay's life. She worked hard to provide for her children, always making sure that everyone's needs were met and that everyone was happy. Kay proudly watched as her children grew and had children of their own, excited to become a grandmother. She would later become a great grandmother, earning the nickname GG, and eventually a great, great grandmother! This thrilled Kay to no end, as she adored babies, snuggling with the little ones as often as she could.
In her free time, Kay loved going to the theatre to see the latest productions as well as attending concerts, especially oldies and doo wop. She was often found dancing along to the music, never missing a beat. This made her the life of the party, being the first and last person on the dance floor at every event. Kay also enjoyed baking delicious made from scratch apple pies, which she would use to fundraise for the Pan Mass Challenge that her granddaughter rides in every year. She was so proud of how many bids her pies would get and how she was able to support raising funds for cancer research. At the various Pan Mass Challenge fundraisers, people would actually donate just to be able to sit and chat with her!
