Calvin F. Alden, age 81, passed away peacefully in the Norwood Hospital on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Norwood, Massachusetts on December 2, 1934, Calvin was the son of the late William E. and Pearl (Mason) Alden. He was raised in Walpole, Massachusetts and graduated from Walpole High School with the Class of 1952.
Calvin proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. First he served on the USS Cadmus and then completed his Naval career as a 2nd class electronics technician on the USS Pawcatuck. After his honorable discharge in 1957, Calvin met his wife to be, Angelina Serio. They were married a year later on September 14, 1958. Together they made their home in Sharon, Massachusetts and raised their loving family. Shortly thereafter, Calvin began taking classes at Northeastern University to earn his Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Calvin took a position with Raytheon in 1966 working in various government programs, including radar, guidance, and communication systems. He retired in 1993 as a quality assurance manager, serving Raytheon for 27 years. Not one to sit home, Calvin went to work driving a handicapped van for YCN, where he had a second career of 18 years.
In his spare time, Calvin loved tending to his vegetable garden, which he methodically mapped out every year. As a young father, he regularly took his family camping at Papoose Pond in Maine and brought them on various road trips around the United States. As his family grew, he enjoyed taking "work-cations" to visit them in Wisconsin and Maine. He cherished his time with Angie, especially on two incredible trips to Italy to visit her extended family where he developed long lasting memories. However, most of all, Calvin was a dedicated grandfather to his 11 grandchildren. He treasured the time spent with them and was always there to cheer them on.
