Brian P. Mulcahy, age 79, passed away in his Sharon, Massachusetts home on Sunday, July 2, 2017. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 20, 1938, he was the son of the late George and Lois (Santamour) Mulcahy. He attended Boston College High School before graduating from Boston English with the Class of 1957. Brian met the love of his life, Barbara Cripps, in 1959, while working at a resort in Plymouth. Their relationship began to unfold as Brian began taking classes to earn his Bachelor's Degree at Suffolk University. He worked his way through college, spending the summer months on Martha's Vineyard working at the Harborside Inn in Edgartown.
Brian and Barbara were married on June 16, 1963, the same day that Brian graduated from Suffolk. They young couple made their home together in the Fens area of Boston and in 1964, Brian took a teaching position at Boston High School in the English Department. He returned to school, earning his Master's Degree from Boston State College in 1966 and the following year, settled into his home in Sharon, Massachusetts. While living in Sharon, Brian and Barbara welcomed their two children, Tara in 1968 and Keith in 1970. Brian had developed a love for the Vineyard from an early age and wanted to instill that love in his family, so in 1974, he built a summer home on Martha's Vineyard, ensuring that his family could spend every July there. Back at home in Sharon, Brian stayed active coaching both Little League and Basketball from 1978 through 1984. Brian retired from Boston High School in 1994 as a new chapter in his life began with the marriage of his daughter, Tara, to her husband, Chris McLellan. Though he was officially retired, Brian began working as a caterer in 1994, continuing to work until 2009.
Travel was a large part of Brian and Barbara's life together. They loved taking trips to the Gulf Coast of Florida in the early 1970s and picked it back up in the early 1990s through 2010. However, they were just as happy spending time in the New England area, visiting various towns and taking weekend trips to Provincetown. In recent years, Brian enjoyed quiet relaxing time at his summer home on the Vineyard.
Throughout his lifetime, Brian enjoyed staying active, he enjoyed playing tennis and racquetball at the area clubs as well as spending time by the ocean, clamming. He was a wonderful cook and always enjoyed a meal that involved oysters, steamers, or lobsters. Brian enjoyed following the stock market, visiting museums, especially the MFA in Boston, and could be found cheering for his beloved Boston Sports Teams. As a long time English teacher, he was a voracious reader and always had his nose in a book, sometimes while he slept. He truly enjoyed his quiet time with his family and his cats and "grandcats."
