Berniece B. (Potter) Knox, age 97, passed away peacefully in the Victoria Haven Nursing Home in Norwood, Massachusetts on Thursday, February 22, 2018. Born in Norwood, Massachusetts on November 5, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Elbert L. and Eliza E. (Bamford) Potter. She was raised in Walpole, Massachusetts and graduated from Walpole High School with the Class of 1938. After graduation, Berniece took a position with the New England Telephone Company working as an operator and later at Bird and Son as chief switchboard operator.
It was while working at Bird and Son that she met her husband to be, Robert M. Knox. Berniece and Bob were married on June 20, 1953, in the United Church in Walpole. The couple made their home together in Walpole and Berniece took on the role of a homemaker, raising and caring for her daughter, Elizabeth, in addition to caring for her mother, Ella. As Liz grew up, Berniece returned to the working world, taking a secretarial position with the Walpole Public Schools in the Superintendent's Office. She later worked at the Boyden School before retiring from the Superintendent's Office in 1983. After retirement, Berniece returned to the volunteer work at Norwood Hospital that she started as a young woman. She served as the co-chair of the Women's Auxiliary and worked in the Gift Shop at Norwood Hospital. Berniece loved the opportunity to volunteer and spent countless hours in the hospital over the period of 50 years.
Throughout her lifetime, Berniece loved to travel and she and Bob took several trips overseas including England, Scotland and a tour of Europe. Berniece and Bob also enjoyed spending their summers in Barnstable Village on Cape Cod and their winters in Boynton Beach, Florida. Berniece enjoyed her quiet time too, spending time working on various crafts, knitting and sewing. After settling into her new home at New Pond Village in Walpole, Berniece served as manager coordinator of the Curiosity Shop.
