Mrs. Anna Elizabeth (Colgan) Hargreaves age 89 years died on Sunday , February 24th, 2007 in the Flushing Hosptial in Flushing, New York. Born in Astoria, New York, on July 25th, 1918, the daughter of the late William and Anna Colgan. She was educated in Astoria, New York , first at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School, the at the Bishop McDonnell High School in Brooklyn, New York, and at New York Univeristy.
Mrs. Hargreaves taught home economics at Huntington High School on Long Island before she entered the United States Army and served her country during World War II. She was stationed at the Cushing Hosptial in Worcester, Massachusetts , where she had met her husband to be Frederick Hargreaves. After her service , she went back to Huntington High School, and later married Fred, in 1956, and they moved to East Walpole. She taught home economics at the West Junior High School, until her retirement in 1981. She also remained in the Army reserves for over 30 years.
She lived in East Walpole until August of 2006, when she moved home to New York to be with her family. She has been in residence at the Sunrise Senior Living in Lynbrook, New York.
A faithful parishioner of Saint Mary's Church East Walpole, and she was a member of the Walpole Womens Club, and a frequent visitor to both the Walpole Public Library and the Norwood Public Library. All of which she supported. Member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the Norfolk County Teachers Association.
Beloved wife of the late Frederick Hargreaves. Sister of Msgr. Thomas J. Colgan, Retired St. Philip Neri , Northport , New York, Robert and his wife Mary Ann Colgan of Astoria, New York, Jeanne Marie Colgan and her husband Francis W. of St. Louis, Missouri, Theresa and her husband Donald Driebeek of Keerbergen, Belgium, the late Joseph Gerard Colgan killed in the Battle of the Bulge, 1944, the late William Richard Colgan killed in the Falaise Pocket, 1944, the late David James Colgan retired Major US Air Force, graduate of West Point, and his wife Katharine Colgan who lives in Augusta , Georgia. Also survived by 13 nieces and nephews and 11 grand nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Saint Mary's Church 176 Washington Street East Walpole on Saturday, March 1st, 2008 at 10AM. Visiting hours are Friday Evening from 4pm to 7pm in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home 48 Common Street Walpole. Interment in Knollwood Memorial Park Canton. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to either the St. Vincent DePaul Society 18 Canton Street Stoughton, Massachusetts 02072 or to Saint Mary's Church 176 Washington Street East Walpole, Massachusetts 02032.
