Andrew Joseph "Gump" Giampietro, Sr., age 97, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2022, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Born in his parent's home in Walpole, Massachusetts on January 3, 1925, he was the son of the late Antonio and Sabina (Lamonica) Giampietro. He was raised in Walpole, where he attended Walpole Public Schools, until taking a position with the railroad, working on the tracks between Walpole and Boston. In June of 1943, Andrew enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country during World War II. He was stationed with Battery C, 758th Field Artillery Battalion, taking part in the campaigns in the Ardennes, the Rhineland, and in Central Europe. After a year and four months overseas in Europe, Andrew returned to the US in February of 1946 and was honorably discharged three months later in May.
Andrew married his beloved wife, Mary E. Burt, on June 3, 1949, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Walpole, Massachusetts. The young couple made their home in Walpole, where they welcomed seven children. As a 100 percent disabled veteran, Andrew worked various jobs around town, from laying bricks to washing the windows of all the downtown store fronts. He was well known around town by his nickname, Gump, and greeted everyone with a smile while he worked. On his well-deserved breaks, Gump could be found trying his luck with a scratch ticket or two in one of the local stores.
Throughout his life, Andrew loved to fish, finding a perfect spot to cast his line. He tried his hand at hunting for a time, chasing after ducks and pheasants. Back at home, Andrew enjoyed reading books and watching movies about World War II, looking at the war from all sides. As an avid Boston sports fan, Andrew loved following the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.
