Albert C. Miller of East Walpole, MA died in the Quincy Medical Center on Saturday, August 6, 2011. He was 96 years.
He was the husband of the late Jane Miller.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1915, he was the son of the late Charles and Grace Miller. He served in the United States Coast Guard Temporary Reserve doing port security duty during World War II. He lived in Walpole, Massachusetts for 60 years, where he and his family were neighbors of the Union Congregational Church of East Walpole. Mr. Miller served the Church as a member of various committees, was a Church Moderator, a Deacon Emeritus, and was active in the Church Food Bank. Mr. Miller was a graduate of Compton Union High School, Compton, CA. He attended Franklin Union School in Boston (a division of MIT), and graduated from Lincoln Technical Institute and Northeastern University with a B.A. in Engineering and Management. In addition, he attended the Lowell Institute, a part of MIT in Cambridge.
Mr. Miller was employed at the General Electric River Works Plant, Lynn, Massachusetts as a Laboratory Technician; he then later worked at the Everett Supercharger Plant. He then went to work for Factory Mutual which became FM Global; he was there for over 50 years and retired in 1981 as Chief Fuel Engineer; where he was active in testing versions of Gas fuel equipment stress systems. He represented FM Global on the NFPA Committee. He was then was retained for several years as a consultant.
He was interested and participated in sports. He was a well known softball pitcher in softball leagues from Cambridge, Somerville, Norwood and Walpole. He enjoyed sailing his Sun Fish Sailboat, touring with the Boston Bike Club, skiing, swimming and bowling. He participated in the Quincy Senior Olympic Games at age 86 and took a Gold Medal. A member of the Azure Lodge A.F & A.M. Walpole, where he was an active member, serving as Treasurer for 32 years, he most recently was Assistant Treasurer and Electrician. He is a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and Aleppo Shriners.
During his years in California, Mr. Miller was very active in the Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, and attained the rank of Eagle Scout, with both Bronze and Gold Palm Awards.
Mr. Miller also served his community, the Town of Walpole, by being a member of the Planning Board, and the Permanent Building Maintenance Advisory Committee.
He is Survived by his daughter Valerie Miller of Medford, a niece Susan Guadagnoli of McLean, VA and George Rush of Hyannisport. Longtime companion of the late Carol Mcguire and Joyce King of Quincy.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Funeral Service in the Union Congregational Church 55 Rhodes Avenue East Walpole on Wednesday, August 10th, 2011 at 11 AM. Visiting hours are Tuesday, August 9, 2011 from 4PM to 8PM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home 48 Common Street Walpole. Interment will be private.
